Close - up: A closer look into Nepali film industry

In Nepal, there are only a handful of existing literature when it comes to arts and specifically film. Jiwan Parajuli, who has been working as an art and entertainment journalist for the past 14 years, adds one more to the list by releasing his book titled ‘Close-up’.

Parajuli’s ‘Close-up’ presents us with an insider's view of how Nepali film industry has come to be and its evolution over the years.

After having conversations with 61 people affiliated with the film industry, Parajuli has included in the book their struggles as emerging artists of their times and simultaneously drawn upon their struggles in the industry over the years.

“As a journalist, when I looked for information related to the entertainment industry, there wasn’t a single book that I could refer to. To archive whatever is left of the history and to give authentic data on the existing Nepali film industry, I saw the need to write this book,” says Parajuli.

Covering a range of issues from the lens of people from the film industry, the book deals with the similarities of Nepali films with Indian films, the industry’s struggle navigating the state law, Nepal’s first female directors, and songs used in the films, and so on.

This book is said to be the first of its series that highlights the history of the industry.
