3,553 cases have been reported in Nepal as rapid antigen tests have added to the number of daily infections.

Nepal on Thursday reported 2,922 new PCR confirmed coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours taking the nationwide infection tally to 841,297. Similarly, 631 people tested positive in a total of 4,583 antigen tests, according to the Health Ministry. 

As of Thursday, 4,967,786 PCR and 873,796 antigen tests have been carried out across the country. A total of 10,498 PCR tests were performed in the past 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry. In its regular situation report, the ministry did not mention the death toll over the past 24 hours. It, however, reported one Covid-19-related fatality. 



The countrywide death toll has now reached 11,610. The number of active cases stands at 14,340 and the rate of infection positivity is 27.83 percent. According to the World Health Organization, if the positivity rate, or the number of tests that return positive for every 100 tests, is more than 5 percent, the pandemic is supposed to be beyond control. According to the ministry, 815,347 infected people have recovered from the disease so far; 271 of them in the last 24 hours. Nepal, on January 7, had reported 24 new Omicron cases. Earlier in December, three Omicron cases were confirmed. 

The Health Ministry said tests conducted on 250 samples from among the 1,146 infected in the Nepali month of Poush had shown S-gene dropouts. Gene-sequencing performed on 24 samples returned Omicron results in all of them. Kathmandu Valley recorded 1,916 new infections in the past 24 hours. Of these, 1,449 cases were confirmed in Kathmandu, 317 in Lalitpur and 150 in Bhaktapur. In the past 24 hours, 206 new infections were recorded in Province 1, 140 in Province 2, 2,114 in Bagmati, 211 in Gandaki, 147 in Lumbini, 31 in Karnali and 63 in Sudurpaschim. On Thursday, 110 individuals infected with the virus were being treated in intensive care units across the country. 

Another 25—four in Province 1, 17 in Bagmati, two in Gandaki and one each in Karnali and Sudurpaschim—were on ventilator support. Nepal on Wednesday reported 2448 new coronavirus cases and two deaths. Similarly, 1,981 new coronavirus cases and one death were recorded on Tuesday and 1,357 new coronavirus cases and two deaths were reported on Monday.
